Mummified Cats in Egypt
Multiple mummified cats have been found in various tombs in Egypt. They date back to more than four thousand years. They were found at Saqqara, south of Cairo. The burial ground was the city of Memphis', which was ancient Egypt's capital for 2,000 years. The Egyptians believed that felines and various other animals help special powers and abilities in the afterlife. The tombs also contained bronze statues of cats dedicated to their cat goddess. The cat's bodies were wrapped in fabrics and then drew on with black pigments.
Woah that is so cool. I wonder if the cats were hairless back then. I'm not sure why but that's how I imagine cats in Egypt. Also, why don't we have a cat goddess? Or super power animals man I wished I lived back then some times.
ReplyDeleteThis is so interesting! From previous knowledge, I knew that cats were worshipped and loved in Ancient Egypt, but I never thought they would be mummified. I wonder what aspects the Egyptians admired in the cat. Did they think the had powers or did the felines just symbolize something important. Overall this is such an interesting article to find.
