Chernobyl "Elephant's foot"

During the Chernobyl disaster in 1986, the elephant's foot was formed. It is a mass of corium and other radioactive materials melted by the extreme temperatures during the melt down. The photograph taken here had to be done from far away with a mirror because when they tried to due just with the camera, it melted. It can provide a lethal dose of radiation in 4.5 minutes.

  1. That's really interesting. How did the photographers and everyone know about the elephants foot in the first place.

  2. That looks extremely dangerous. I wonder how hot that stuff was and what it could do.
