Why Killer Whales Chased Tourism Boat
Killer whales are known to be the biggest members of the oceanic dolphin family. There are two main types of killer whales, resident and transient killer whales, resident whales stay around coastlines and mainly eat fish, while transient killer whales are known for their hunting, especially for seals, sea lions, and even other whales. In the video, the group of tourists was very frightened by a group of killer whales; which was a transient group, that was following their boat. Killer whales don't prey on humans and are usually fussy eaters. Though it looks like the killer whales are attacking the tourists they most likely were not and the video even comes up with the prediction that they were learning to hunt and building teamwork with each other.
I think that it is very interesting that the whales didn't want to harm the tourists and were just training themselves for hunting. Overall I think these whales are very interesting animals and find it fascinating that they knew that it was a boat and not food. These whales can also communicate by making a clicking noise, whistling, and making a pulsing noise. The whales were able to know that the boat was not food because they use their echolocation. Which helps them find and locate food. Killer whales also use echolocation to define other objects.

I found it very interesting that these whales were following the boat, to train on how to hunt for food. I knew whales use echolocation to speak to each other, but I didn't know that they actually hunt and train together. i can also only imagine being on that boat, getting followed by the biggest member of the oceanic family. What would you do? I would probably freak out and cry.
ReplyDeleteI found it interesting that the whales used the boat as training. This is interesting for me because they are so used to the boats that they knew it was a boat, and used it for training, instead of swimming away from it. I also found it cool that the hunt and train together.
