A Stranded Venezuelan Oil Tanker is a Potential Disaster

In an article written by National Geographic, it explains how an oil tanker is floating 24 miles off of  Venezeaula. The oil tanker holds "1.3 million barrels of crude oil" for almost two years. The tanker is called The Nabarima and holds five times more oil than 1989 Exxon-Valdez, Alaska spill. If even a fraction spilled it would create a oil spill disaster that may last for years in the Carribean sea.

Eduardo Klein, an environmental scientist believes that the vessel is contained. He is familiar with how the tanker was made and knows that it is and will be fine, for now. Klein is most worried about how the Venezeulan government will react, or wont react to if the boat spills. The government has had two leaks this summer and didn't do anything about it.

Personally, I think that The Nabarima is under control for now, but I'm worried about the sea. If the Venezuelan government hasn't done anything in the past about oil leaks, what will they do when it could ruin the Carribean ocean to the north. the article stated, "Depending on the size of a spill, the effects may linger for decades, long after clean-up efforts have ended." Overall, The potential oil leak to me is nerve racking and makes me fearful for the future of the coast of Venezeaula.
