Pollution in the Ocean

In the article "Plastic Pollution Affects Sea life Throughout the Ocean", it states that nearly 13 million metric tons of plastic end up in the ocean every year! That's a lot of plastic! Animals such as: fish, birds, sea turtles and marine mammals eat this plastic or get tangled in it and end up dying. Almost 100,000 marine animals die every year just from a tiny piece of plastic you didn't throw away. Why put these animals lives in danger when you could get throw your trash in a trashcan? Research shows that half of the sea turtles worldwide have ingested plastic some way or another. This research also shows that a sea turtle that ingests just 14 pieces of plastic has an increased risk of death. Scientist have also proven and told us that nearly 60% of all seabirds have ingested plastic in their lifetime, and they suspect this number to go up to 99% in the early 2050's. So many animals in the world are affected just by the tiniest peace of trash. You may not thing that a little bag will hurt any animal, but next time think again!

I mainly read about this article because many people don't understand how important it is to throw away your trash. People should be more concerned about cleaning up their trash because it is affecting our oceans worldwide. Before you know it, we might not even have any marine animals left! That's a crazy thought, but if we don't take care of our oceans soon it may be true.

  1. I agree that if us humans keep this up, there will not be any marine animals left. Pollution in the ocean not only affects the ocean and its creatures, but it affects us as well. If we continue to pollute the oceans, it can contaminate our water supplies and we would no longer have any marine resources left. Unless we want all the marine animals to be locked up in captivity, pollution needs to slow down and stop.

  2. It is so sad to think that 13 million metric tons of plastic ends up in the ocean every year and even just a little amount of that can harm so many animals. Many people don't realize how much pollution is in the ocean and how bad it is for the animals living in the ocean. This article is a good reminder to make sure we throw our trash away.

  3. I thought this article was very interesting and learned a lot. Especially when you talked about how much plastic is being consumed by these animals. Do you really think that one day there won't be any sea animals left? It's crazy how much we are effecting the world in a negative way.
